WHY HAS NO ONE HEARD OF KRISTEEN YOUNG?

Kristeen Young poses for a portrait on a bed strewn with books

AMERICAN SINGER, songwriter, keyboardist and maverick fashionista, Kristeen Young, is undeniably one the most underrated talents in popular music today.

She was discovered by world renowned producer Tony Visconti, has toured industriously alongside Morrissey and recorded duets with David Bowie and Patrick Stump. She has yielded an impressive string of albums, consistently improving on the previous one.

I had already heard a few of her tracks in passing, but when I had the chance to attend one of her performances, earlier in the year she really won me over. Her soaring vocals, vicious assult on the audience’s senses and the way she attacks her weapon (a keyboard) are an exciting contrast to some of the more boring trenches of the pop music landscape, today.

    WINTER IN AMSTERDAM: 2012

Me in the Netherlands down the road from where I was staying.

Me in the Netherlands down the road from where I was staying.

THE YEAR started with a trip to Amsterdam, a city which exceeded my expectations of its architecture, culture and travel.

On every corner you are likley to find a beautiful, unspoilt view which looks like a New York reinvented by the Europeans.

Only staying for a couple of days, there was not nearly enough time for all on offer, but I still managed to capture a quick overview.

Because of the brevity of my stay it meant I had little time to stress about the minutia of each photograph. This was great practise, as it meant I had to get every shot correct first time.

    RETROSPECTIVE: 2011 – STEPHEN MERCHANT

2011 was the year Stephen Merchant (The Office, Extras) was back in the public eye.

Obviously a very busy year for Stephen, starting with ‘The Ricky Gervais Show’; a starring role in the award winning ‘Portal 2′, alongside J. K. Simmons; writing, directing and starring in his massively new Sitcom, ‘Life’s Too Short’, alongside Ricky Gervais and Warwick Davis and launching his stand up career with a UK tour, ‘Hello Ladies’.

He even managed to squeeze in roles in films ‘Hall Pass’, ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ and a photo with me, of course.

RETROSPECTIVE: 2011 – CORNWALL FILM FESTIVAL

2011 was the year the Cornwall Film Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The cultural, artsy fest showcased some freshly made highlights of 2011, and upcoming in 2012, many of them hidden gems.

As this milestone was reached, it was obviously a very cool to have some of my artwork used to promote the festival:

A bit of trivia: I created many pieces of art in the run up to the festival, but the chosen piece (shown above) was created literally an hour before handing it all in!

QUEEN’S ROGER TAYLOR CELEBRATES CONTROVERSIAL NEW SCULPTURE

DRUMMER, Millionaire, rock icon – these are a few words people will associate with Queen’s Roger Taylor. You can also add Truronian to that list.

The man got virtually everyone hammering out “Thud, thud, clap! Thud, thud, clap! We will… We will rock you!” along to their stereo has strong, childhood roots in Truro, Cornwall, England.

On Saturday, 25th June, the Queen drummer paid a visit to Truro piazza for the unveiling of the £95,000 new sculpture commissioned for the city centre.

His first steps toward a career in music began in Truro starting with his first band at the age of only seven, “The Bubblingover Boys”, then later “The Reaction”, after which he began university where he met Brian May, forming “Smile”, an early incarnation of a band that would later top the charts. ACCLAIMED FILM DIRECTOR RETURNS TO THE SOUTH-WEST

PRAISED FILM director, Joanna Hogg, made an appearance at Truro’s Plaza Cinema, bringing her new film, set entirely on the Isles of Scilly, back to the south-west of the country.

Her new film, Archipelago, meaning a group or cluster of islands, not only describes the Isles of Scilly, but perfectly labels the unhealthy, strained relationships between its characters.

Extensively praised by Film 2011’s Claudia Winkleman, London Film Festival and numerous critics, the wide applaud is following in a similar vein to her 2008 film, “Unrelated”, which won the International Critics Prize at the London Film Festival.

Winkleman went as far as to say Lydia Leonard in her performance as the sister, Cynthia, “deserves a medal” for her brilliantly believable performance.

Characters such as the son in a quarter life crisis, the anxious, obnoxious sister and the cold, distant mum, all make for unsettling, viewing. Joanna Hogg provides little let up from this, only punctuating the unease with the occasional laugh.

However, at the recent Truro Plaza Cinema Continue reading
